Computer Requirements

For students entering in Fall 2017

These requirements apply to all students enrolling in on-campus degree programs at the School of Law. This includes JD, LLM and SJD degrees. There are separate computer requirements for the online MSL degree program.

Minimum Requirements

Students are required to have a laptop computer that meets the following requirements:

  • Supported operating system (see below)
  • Memory: 4 GB minimum
  • Storage: 120 GB minimum
  • Wireless: 802.11ac Wi‑Fi
  • Webcam

Supported Operating Systems:

  • Windows 8.1
  • Windows 10
  • macOS Sierra (10.12)

You must have administrator privileges on the laptop and virtualization software may not be used to run the operating system.

Chromebooks (running Chrome OS), tablets and other mobile devices (running Windows RT, iOS, Android, etc.) and laptop computers running older versions of Windows and macOS do not meet the minimum requirements.

Support is not available for computers that do not have a licensed copy of the operating system.

Preferred Vendors

While students may use any laptop computer that meets the minimum requirements, students who plan to purchase a computer are encouraged to consider Apple or Dell. Discounts are available on purchases from these vendors.

Wake Forest University is an authorized service provider for Apple and Dell. There is no charge for warranty repairs. Charges for parts and labor apply if the computer is not under warranty or damaged.

Apple

Discounts are available on Apple computers through the Wake Forest University bookstore and the Apple Education Store.

Dell

Discounts are available on Dell computers through the Wake Forest University bookstore.

Software

Microsoft Office

Office 365 is available at no charge while enrolled as a student at the School of Law. This software suite includes Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint. It is available for Windows, Mac and mobile devices.

Adobe Creative Cloud

Creative Cloud is available at no charge while enrolled as a student at the School of Law. This software suite includes Adobe Acrobat Pro DC for creating and editing PDF documents. It is available for Windows, Mac and mobile devices.
